Plain of Jars
The 10-hr bus into Phonsavan, the capital of Xieng Khouang province in Central Laos and the gateway to the Plain of Jars, was bumpy and draining. We had hot pots in the night market, and then toured the Plain of Jars the next day.
The major attraction Plain of Jars, is to be nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status. The Plain of Jars combines ancient and contemporary history with insights into Phuan, Hmong, Khmu and Tai Dam culture. Very little is known about the civilization that created The Plain of Jars. There are hundreds of jars across the various sites. More recently the area suffered badly due to heavy bombardment by the Americans during the Vietnam War. Between the white markers means that MAG have cleared surface and deep ordinance. The read zone means that only surface ordinance has been cleared.
The main economic activity in Phonsavanh is based on government administration, mining companies from China and Australia, tourism and the work of NGOs related to UXO clearance. We watched a documentary at the Mag center on the UXO clearance.
Phonsavan has a pleasant climate all year around, and it can become pretty cold during nights (it is on an altitude of 1100m). The countryside is dominated by green hills and pine forests. Villages consist of colourful wood houses and often raise cattle.
