I attended an AI seminar and ran into a startup with great potential, then set up a meeting the next day. I checked out the shopping and outdoor entertainment after the meeting.

Alms ceremony — monks at dawn

I woke up at 5:00 am to join two hostel mates to see the Alms ceremony — monks at dawn collecting alms of rice from kneeling villagers and tourists, along Sakkaline Road near Wat Sensoukharam. The vendors laid out a long row of rice baskets and stools for tourists who have paid for the privilege of giving alms. Seeing these tourists, who make up the majority of the alms-givers, seated on plastic stools participating out of fun rather than sincerity definitely reduces the authenticity of the moment. Out of respect to the monks, we only watched this old tradition from a distance. Before leaving the hostel to catch up their flight to Hanoi, my hostel mates invited me to consume their shares of breakfast for them, so I did without the breads.

Classmate taxi-toured me Yangon highlights

I was so happy to see my classmate since 1992 who lives in Yangon over two years. Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, is a bustling cosmopolitan city in Myanmar (Burma). He taxi-toured me around town today to sites out of walking distances, fed me lavish meals, and helped me to get overnight bus tickets to other cities. We walked along the Kandawgyi Lake and took photos in front of the reconstructed Karaweik Palace (now a restaurant), with the gleaming Shwedagon Pagoda as background (which is a 98m gilded stupa but under repair, so we skipped it). We visited St Mary’s Cathedral, with its exterior of striking red bricks and colossal spires, is Myanmar’s largest Catholic cathedral. Beautifully maintained from 1909, the interior is resplendent with intricate patterns, enough to make it akin to the venerated cathedrals in European.
