Overnight bus to Inle Lake

I was fully warned about the bumpy roads, crazy bus drivers, freezing cold AC, and loud music in Myanmar buses, and I experienced a crazy bus driver first hand last night during my overnight bus from Yangon to Inle Lake. It was a VIP bus with a 2+1 configuration, which is two large leather seats on one side, and a single seat on the opposite side like mine (7A).

Also, Two European girls complained about the mosquitos at the back of the bus, and switched to a later bus.

Our bus suddenly sped up and twisting and turning like a police chase for 3 minutes. I immediately tightened my seat belt, sallowed motion sickness pills, prayed quietly that I wouldn’t die in a Myanmar bus. One local passenger explained to me that another bus clipped on the rare mirror of ours and tried to run away, so our bus chased the other bus even with a sharp and fast U-turn. With all that, I actually had a sound sleep during the bus ride in the blanket and wide seat, although I was waken three times to get off the bus as toilet break. I woke up and saw the astounding dawn views of Inle Lake.

Classmate taxi-toured me Yangon highlights

I was so happy to see my classmate since 1992 who lives in Yangon over two years. Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, is a bustling cosmopolitan city in Myanmar (Burma). He taxi-toured me around town today to sites out of walking distances, fed me lavish meals, and helped me to get overnight bus tickets to other cities. We walked along the Kandawgyi Lake and took photos in front of the reconstructed Karaweik Palace (now a restaurant), with the gleaming Shwedagon Pagoda as background (which is a 98m gilded stupa but under repair, so we skipped it). We visited St Mary’s Cathedral, with its exterior of striking red bricks and colossal spires, is Myanmar’s largest Catholic cathedral. Beautifully maintained from 1909, the interior is resplendent with intricate patterns, enough to make it akin to the venerated cathedrals in European. Rangoon Tea House for Burmese foodie adventure

My classmate took me to the trendy Rangoon Tea House for a Burmese foodie adventure. Tea is the way of life in Yangon, and pretty much everyone has a cup of tea, everyday. Teahouses are a place where locals gather and socialize over some snacks and a cup of tea. The Tea House has an elegant blend of classic and modern Burmese culture. Besides, the cafe has notable facilities of projector playing classic Burmese movies and music. While it borrows elements from neighbouring India, Thailand, and China, Myanmar’s cuisine is easily recognisable with its unique flavours served piping hot and fresh. We ordered Mohinga (a noodle dish smothered with a hearty fish broth and toppings available to you, such as chilli flakes and cilantro), Onnokauswe ( of thicker noodles in a thick soup of coconut milk added with chicken), Laphet thote (a salad of fermented tea leaves and a variety of nuts and sliced vege), spicy pork curry, and Burmese milk tea.
